Becoming One With Life

Joy and peace are our true nature. All of the spiritual teachings point towards that truth. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize that nature, especially when I encounter something that triggers me into feeling stressed out. The day-to-day struggle of owning and running a business can easily send my Zen yogi demeanor into a tailspin and my ego starts to rear its ugly head. That’s when I remember (and my kids often remind me) that I need to be One With Life. After all, if I’m going to talk the talk, I need to walk the walk.

I used to live in my head. A neurotic over-thinker who constantly dwelled on the past and worried about the future. I rarely appreciated the present moment.

That all changed when I turned 40 and decided that I was tired of my own bullshit. I was going through a mid-life crisis and I knew that something had to change.  I had to “wake up” and rewrite my story by breaking unhealthy patterns of thinking.

I read two books by Eckhart Tolle that changed my life: The Power of Now and The New Earth. These books expound upon what it means to be One With Life.  In sum and substance, they say that being One With Life means accepting the present moment regardless of what it brings. It means responding to each situation as it occurs from a place of awareness rather that reacting on behalf of the egoic mind. It means changing a situation if it needs to be changed, and remaining in a state of acceptance, enthusiasm or enjoyment if it is not possible to do so. Resisting the present moment causes suffering. When you practice observing your thoughts, you realize that they do not define you. They are only stories in your head. This observation takes you back to the present moment. A state of alert awareness. A state of grace.

Those books were a guidepost. They were the first step towards realizing my true nature and being One With Life. Spiritual readings, yoga, meditation and fitness boxing became my daily routine before I started the workday.

I started a new side hustle as a boxing promoter and that became the beginning of a whole new chapter in my life filled with adventure and entrepreneurial dreams. Ten years later I started a tequila company and named it “One With Life Organic Tequila” using the bottle as a vessel to share the message that was transformative to me. I still have a long way to go, but I am grateful for how far I have come and even more grateful for the people who joined me on this journey!
